Any Color as Long as it is Green: St. Patrick’s Day Events
Posted on 06. Nov, 2009 by Fred in Chicago Events
Although in Ireland, St. Patrickâs Day is a holy day and not a day for vast celebrating, in the United States, this is one of the biggest party days of the year. This is especially true in cities such as Boston, New York and Chicago, all of which have a huge Irish American heritage. Most of the St. Patrickâs Day events include parades and parties. Most of the parades are attended by local politicians who often state that this is a day when everyone is Irish.
Boston St. Patrickâs Day Events
Boston is one of the cities where there are the most St. Patrick’s Day events such as parties in bars and a large parade. The Boston Commons hosts Irish Dancers in the park as well as Irish foods and music during this day, no matter what the weather. There is the large St. Patrick’s Day parade through the heart of the city that is attended by dignitaries from Boston as well as Massachusetts.
Other St. Patrick’s Day events that take place in Boston include parties in local pubs and bars. Green beer is a substance that is sold by the mug on this day. The beer is tinted green with food coloring. Corned beef and cabbage is made on this day in pubs as Irish fare is served to the masses.
New York St. Patrickâs Day Events
Broadway comes alive for St. Patrickâs Day as the parade takes place throughout the city and is second only to the Macy Thanksgiving Day parade. Politicians make it their business to march in the St. Patrickâs Day parade that ends up in Central Park each year. Central Park also hosts Irish dance and music throughout the park during the week leading up to St. Patrickâs Day.
Not all of the parades take place in Manhattan. There is also a Brooklyn St. Patrickâs Day parade that takes place in this borough the week before St. Patrickâs Day. This parade, although not as much attended by as many politicians and dignitaries, is a fun St. Patrickâs Day event for New York Irish Americans.
Chicago St. Patrickâs Day Events
Chicago has a large Irish American population and actually has two official St. Patrickâs Day events – the two parades that feature floats and politicians from the state and city. The official St. Patrickâs Day parade moves down LaSalle Street on St. Patrickâs Day and is attended by the mayor as well as any visiting dignitaries. It winds up at Daley Plaza.
The unofficial St. Patrickâs Day parade is considered to be one of the high St. Patrickâs Day events for the city and includes the Southside Irish Parade that moves down Western Avenue, an area that was once exclusively Irish American. This parade even draws more of a crowd than the official parade and is considered to be the prime St. Patrickâs Day events of the city. Most of the politicians that march in the downtown parade also put in an appearance at the South Side Irish parade.
Throughout the United States, St. Patrickâs Day events consist of parades, dances, foods and green beer. In Chicago, the Chicago River is turned a shade of green with food coloring to honor this day.
